CHICAGO – The Notre Dame hat looked awkward, perched above Alex Anzalone’s headphones. But the place fit fine enough to convince one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects to start his college career there, and in a bit of a hurry, too.
Anzalone, a top 50 linebacker once committed to Ohio State, announced a new oral commitment on Sunday to play for the Irish starting in 2013 — while also revealing his intent to enroll early in January for a head start in competing to replace Manti Te’o in the middle.
The 6-foot-3-inch, 220-pound Anzalone indeed is expected to play the “Mike” inside linebacker position for the Irish and rates as the No. 49 prospect nationally according to Rivals.com. He announced his decision on ESPNU.
